New tower blocks signal good news for Manchester
The WOLFF 235 B crane, alongside a WOLFF 166 B, both owned by Mayo Civil Engineering, are there to construct a pair of buildings that will have a positive impact on the city vista, as well as the local economy.
When built, the two impressive tower blocks in New Victoria, one standing at 20 storeys tall and the other 25, will provide 520 new homes on top of ground-floor retail and leisure outlets, alongside other public areas.
Towering over the skyline at almost 100 metres
It is the first time that the new WOLFF 235 B crane has been seen in the UK, standing at a staggering 98m tall and fitted with a 45m jib. What makes it even more impressive is that it needed to be free-standing, so as not to slow down construction by tying to the building.
To overcome the challenge, eight 3 x 3m TV 33 tower elements on foundation anchors were used at the base of the crane. It was erected to its final tower height using a 500-tonne mobile crane with a 63m luffing jib attached to its main boom.
Working alongside is a hydraulic WOLFF 166 B luffing jib crane that stands 83.2m tall and is also fitted with a 45m jib.
The continuation of a fruitful 6 year partnership
Mayo Civil Engineering has worked closely with WOLFFKRAN for the past 6 years and they are reaping the rewards of deciding to purchase new WOLFF cranes, rather than hire them.
“Working with WOLFFKRAN on the New Victoria project has been a pleasure. From the initial discussions, agreeing crane specification and purchase, through to erection planning and actual on-site erection, the full WOLFFKRAN team has provided a first-class service with a helpful, can-do attitude at all times.”
Gary Mayo, Managing Director of Mayo Civil Engineering.
Mayo Civil Engineering has previously used the WOLFF 166 B cranes they purchased to enable successful completion of construction projects at Ancoats Gardens and Queen Street in Manchester.
