Second life for a tower crane: refurbished WOLFF 100 B powers the Hive project in Sheffield, UK

20.05.2026 | News

Our refurbished WOLFF 100 B is now working on the Hive project in Sheffield for our client Birkbeck Structures, proving that age is just a number and that tower cranes should never be considered disposable.

By choosing refurbishment over manufacturing new equipment, resultant emissions can be reduced by up to 92%. This minimises the need for new materials, extends equipment life and supports a more efficient, circular approach to construction equipment.

A Crane with a second life

Originally manufactured in 1996, the WOLFF 100 B underwent a full refurbishment at the Luckau production plant in Germany. The process involved complete dismantling, sandblasting back to bare steel, structural inspection and rebuilding using a combination of refurbished and replacement components where required. After nearly 30 years of service, engineering inspections confirmed the original structure remained in excellent condition, requiring only targeted minor repairs.

To date, WOLFFKRAN has completed four tower crane refurbishments, including the WOLFF 100 B. Each refurbished machine retains its original “birth certificate” and manufacturing date, alongside a second refurbishment record marking its renewed life. It is also delivered with full documentation of all works carried out, including photographs, detailed parts lists, part numbers as well as a new serial specific manual which reflects the work that has been done.

Cutting Carbon, Extending Life, Proven Reliability

The environmental impact of refurbishment is where the difference is most significant. Manufacturing a new tower crane requires substantial material and energy input, while refurbishment avoids up to 92% of those associated emissions.

By extending the life of steel already in circulation, demand for virgin materials is reduced, along with emissions linked to both production and recycling. It is not “carbon negative” technology, but it is a clear and practical way of avoiding large, unnecessary emissions by making better use of what already exists.

“Available data consistently shows that, when properly maintained, WOLFF tower crane performance does not diminish with age. With all refurbishments work fully traceable and documented, refurbished WOLFF cranes offer a reliable & cost effective alternative to replacement.” says Dave Holder, Managing Director WOLFFKRAN Ltd, UK.
